Message from the Principal

24th March 2023

Hello all.

We would like to update you all on issues of importance to the school.

Firstly, regarding the transfer of patronage to Longford Westmeath Education & Training Board.

  1. A meeting was held in school  on Tuesday 13th March and attended by our Chairperson Michael Hickey, Fr Pat Murphy, Eileen Ward ( Diosecan Secretary) Brian Higgins Director of Schools ETB, Liz Laferty CEO LWETB, myself and Yvonne Naughton. The present Board of Management will remain in place until 30th August 2023, which is the day the school re-opens for the 2023/24 school year.

  2. Brian Higgins, Director of Schools, will be in charge of management from that date until a new Board is put in place over the following months.

  3. Meanwhile, work will begin at an administrative level between the two patrons to prepare necessary files, policies and systems etc. for transfer.

  4. We hope to form a Transition Committee immediately after Easter consisting of Staff, Parents and ETB representatives to discuss any changes that may or may not occur regarding uniforms, school name etc. We will contact you shortly regarding this.

  5. After Easter also, we will organise a meeting with St Mary's Parish and invite parents with concerns regarding children receiving Sacraments in the coming years, to attend.

News from the Department of Education,

As you may be aware, the Department of Education has announced that a grant will be given to each primary school pupil to cover the cost of school books and copies for the coming school year. We will contact you at a later date with more information on this.

School Building Maintenance

  1. We hope to attend to some school repairs, guttering and fascia over the Easter Break.

  2. We have contracted a painter and hope that they can begin the process of painting the exterior of the school over the break.

Kind Regards

Carmel Garvey

Message from the Principal & Staff

16th December 2022

Hello all.

Just a short note to inform you of our Christmas celebrations this year. Classes are joining to perform together for the first time since the Pandemic. It's heartening to watch and hear the festive music and song fill the corridors again bringing some welcome cheer. Parents and

Guardians are invited to join in the cheer at the following times. Performances will last from approximately 20 mins for Infants and 1st and 2nd classes, up to approximately 40 mins  for 5th and 6th classes.

  • Monday 19th 1 pm:  3rd  and 4th classes

  • Monday 19th 2pm:  5th  and 6th classes

  • Tuesday 20th10 am: Junior and Senior Infants

  • Tuesday 20th10.45am: 1st and 2nd classes

We believe Santa will visit our school on Wednesday morning at ten but we await confirmation from the elves as we know this is a very busy time for him.

All classes are taking part in the ' Build a Reindeer' initiative to impress on Santa just how well we've behaved this past year.

Junior and Senior Infant  children are currently carrying out inspection visits to An Post Sorting Centre Office to make sure letters to Santa and Christmas parcels are being properly delivered at this important time also. They were very impressed with the hard work being carried out by the Postal workers.

The children in all classes can enjoy this year's Helix Panto 'Hansel and Gretel' which is available to us online in the school for the coming week.

We will have a "Christmas Jumper Day" when children can wear brightly coloured sweaters/clothes  instead of their uniform, on Friday 16th December to help pay for the Panto.  Suggested donation of €2 per child, as usual, for this fun day.

Children in 5th and 6th classes enjoyed a book club event on Tuesday with liberal servings of hot chocolate. 3rd and 4th classes are looking forward to a book themed table quiz next week. We encourage parents to make books and reading a central part of the Christmas holidays alongside board games and family movie night.

Cornamaddy School will close at 12pm on Wednesday 21st December and reopen on Thursday morning, 5th January at 9.20am.

While the HSE continue to advise and remind us all to maintain good etiquette around hygiene and sickness, we hope all our families enjoy a more normal and peaceful Christmas this year.

From all the Staff of Cornamaddy NS

Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year
